- Processing Leads the Universe
Processing and infrastructure was the strongest category in TPC's universe, an equal-weight gain of 3.53 percent against 0.92 percent for the universe, with individual names ranging from −1.62 to +10.77 percent. This week's company disclosures do not establish a cause.
- Issuers Slip After Reporting
Most issuing banks finished lower after their third-quarter reports. Capital One and Synchrony published results on Tuesday and Bread Financial on Thursday; U.S. Bancorp and The Bancorp rose.
- Consumer Lending Diverges
Pagaya Technologies rose 10.77 percent while Affirm fell 5.31 percent. Upstart disclosed a revolving credit facility of up to $200 million to support the capitalization of Upstart Bank.
- Treasury Yields Ease
The 10-year Treasury yield fell 13 basis points to 4.96 percent and the 2-year fell 9 basis points to 4.65 percent between the October 16 and October 22 closes.
Up 10.77 percent on the week, the largest gain in TPC's 50-name universe. Four-week change is +12.26 percent.
Pagaya underwrites loans for bank and fintech partners and passes the exposure to institutional investors. It reports third-quarter results on Thursday, the first company-level evidence on whether its origination volumes have changed.
Down 9.71 percent on the week, the steepest decline in the universe. Four-week change is -20.17 percent.
Reported as a price move only. TPC does not attribute a cause.
Down 5.31 percent on the week, the second-steepest decline in the universe.
Affirm's only filings this week were annual-meeting proxy materials. TPC reports the price change without attributing a cause.
Up 5.72 percent on the week.
Reported as a price move only. This week's evidence does not establish a cause.
Down 2.93 percent on the week, the steepest decline among issuing banks. Four-week change is -8.14 percent.
Citigroup reported third-quarter results before this week. The week's evidence does not establish a cause for the decline.
Down 0.12 percent on the week, after a 3.7 percent decline on Friday.
American Express reported third-quarter results on Friday in an 8-K and its quarterly 10-Q. TPC has not yet reviewed the results in detail.
The useful signal this week is about timing, not direction. Most large issuers have now published third-quarter results, so the next read on consumer credit comes from the lenders and fintechs reporting next week, and from the network commentary in Mastercard's report on Thursday. A week of share-price divergence between fee-based processors and spread-based lenders is not, on its own, evidence about which revenue model is stronger. Use it as a prompt to check how exposed your own revenue is to funding costs, not as a verdict on that exposure.
